Consumer Units
What is a consumer unit?
A consumer
unit or CU or CCU is a type of distribution board utilised generally in
domestic and light commercial environments. Other names for a consumer
unit are:
- Fuse Board - Fuse Box - Split Load Consumer Unit - Switchboards - Distribution Board
A
consumer unit houses the fuses/RCDs/MCBs which are utilised as a
protective means of automatically disconecting final circuit supplies
in the event of a fault. Furthermore, the consumer unit should also
incorporate a means of complete isolation of the installation,
typically a douple-pole isolator which will disconnect both the line
and neutral conductors of a single phase supply.
See 'Protective Devices' for further information.
